FINAL EDITED IMAGES AND EVALUATION

Trends, dictated by a few and lived through the masses. 2015, was the year of the #KylieJennerLipChallenge, for those who do not know who Kylie is, it is probably because you have  been hibernating for the past couple of years. Kylie Jenner is the youngest sister of the Kardashian Family and after living the majority of her childhood on camera for her family TV Show viewers and fans alike started to notice her lips mysteriously increasing in size. Jenner claimed that her personal makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic was just simply over lining her lips using MAC Cosmetics Spice Pencil and filling her lips in with Velvet Teddy Lipstick, another MAC Cosmetic product and Jenner instantly started a trend, beauty bloggers, YouTube stars and Instagram artists immediately began over lining their lips and making tutorials on ‘How To Get Lips Like Kylie Jenner’. Jenner was the source of millions of likes, comments and views and more importantly, the sales boost of MAC Cosmetics now Best Selling Nude Lipstick. #KylieJennerLipChallenge a more bad than good trend on social media this year where fans of Jenner’s would use household items such as Shot Glasses and Tube’s to increase their lip sizes, this was bought around by another company who wanted to cash in on Jenner’s media attention by creating a plastic product that claimed to enhance lips naturally by just simply sucking on the product for several seconds. This trend had some devastating outcomes with fans being permanently scarred and while Jenner condoned any influence with these products, fans continued to try it. How can one person’s lips cause such media attention you ask? How could people cause themselves harm and discomfort to obtain similar results to Jenner’s? More importantly, how could they not realise that she had Lip Fillers the entire time, something she later confessed to at 17 years old.
The real question here is, why are we influenced so much by celebrities? Why does Pop Culture dictate our everyday lives? Why do we buy those cute Chelsea boots from Topshop because Kate Upton has those exact ones? Our generation is controlled by businesses using celebrities as marketing strategies, take L’Oreal for example, Cheryl Cole model’s for their Hairspray Campaigns, you see her beautiful hair and how well it holds in that 30 second clip on TV but little do you know, Cheryl did not create that look and the hairspray is not the only product keeping that beehive in place but we, the potential clients will buy this product believing we can get hair just like Cheryl.
Back to the question at hand, are celebrities a huge part of why average people get surgery? Are we as a generation influenced by them? In many ways no, have you seen Donatella Versace, she is the poster girl for say NO to surgery but marketing strategies influence us to get surgery because our favourite well known celebrity has it too. The Private Clinic of Harley Street have a page called Celebrities and Cosmetic surgery where the writers talk about well-known celebs and the surgeries they have had which is a great read however, scroll to the bottom of the post and you see ‘For more information on rejuvenation and anti-ageing treatments available at The Private Clinic,visit: http://www.theprivateclinic.co.uk/treatments/anti-ageing’ evidence that using celebrities as marketing points can attract more customers. Other examples of this include surgeons calling themselves ‘Celebrity Plastic Surgeons’ like Dr Nirdosh whose clinic is on Harley Street, London. Dr Nirdosh’s website shows us we can obtain ‘Kate Middleton Cheek Bones’ another example of Celebrity Marketing.
Now, were not saying you’re wrong for wanting surgery but are you doing it for you or because a celebrity did the same? Our goal here is to make our readers question their need for surgery based on the fact Marketing and the power it holds could influence a decision not suited to you.

My Product Shots

My first product shot is based on a majority of the products I used for my photoshoot. They include Laura Mercier Original Face Primer, Make Up Forever HD Foundation for the face, Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation(Under eyes), MAC Face and Body for the shoulders, neck and chest area, NARS Orgasm Highlighter (Cheekbones and Neck Area) Illamasqua loose powder to set, Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Palette, Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow for Brows, MAC Lip Mix for Lips.

This product shot is of the skin products I used creating my looks along with my professional blog title. My blog title was created in Photoshop by myself, I used nude colours as a its more 'Organic' than black, which i was originally going to use. I included the lines underneath as a reference to one of my planned looks which involved drawing surgical lines on the face.

Evaluation-
My relevant copy to support one photo shoot, this is for my Lip fillers inspired shoot. My copy concentrates on how Pop Culture influences our desire for surgery. I touch upon the huge social media and media coverage of Kylie Jenner from this year when she finally admitted to getting lip fillers at age 17, something that sparked thousands of girls trying to do the same thing and they were not all necessarily her infamous fans or followers.
I also touch on how adverts can make us believe something that is not 100% true and finally, i touch on how plastic surgeons tempt us into surgery by using 'Celebrity Plastic surgeon' in their websites and also how they use lines like 'get kate middleton cheek bones' on their websites to lure potential clients in. We are very influenced by pop culture and some people don't even notice this.
My counter argument however that sometimes this is not a bad thing, plastic surgery can be deadly if not done in a safe practising clinic and that people idolise celebrities to the point they will obtain the money to look like them and some people can not afford this, so they turn to cheaper, dangerous alternatives.

Illustration testing

I decided to try out Adobe Illustrator to create an image of lips, which is a main focal point of my project and also to include my theme title, organic beauty. I did this completely free hand and I am very pleased with how it turned out considering I was using my trackpad to draw. I do believe I have a lot to learn with illustrations, which is something i am very keen to learn!
I initially wanted the image to be just an outline, in black and white but it turned into more of a pop art image.

Relevant Copy Ideas

As part of this unit I have to complete a relevant copy which is a written piece of work that compliments my images. My theme being Organic Beauty and my sub theme being cosmetic surgery, I want to write about several things including:

  • The History Of Cosmetic Surgery
  • Get The Look without Surgery
  • How Pop Culture has influenced a surgery boom

My research will need to look at several aspects including celebrities and the surgeries they have had and one particular celeb, Kylie Jenner. Kylie admitted at 17 years old to having regular lip injections, this started a HUGE boom in lip augmentations and even resulted in people who'm were unable to afford the surgery to using a product that requires the user to suck in for several seconds and the results stated you could obtain 'Luscious lips' however this was far from the truth. I am really interested in how we are influenced by celebrities.

My next stage of research will be to look at the History of surgery and how popular it has become, I am thinking of doing a smaller copy for this with some figures/examples and include my own research/questionnaire.

My final stage of research will be how we can enhance our images without the need of surgery but with the use of cosmetic products. We can over line our lips with pencils/contouring to create an appearance of plumper lips, highlight and contour to change the appearance of bone structure etc...

Photo Shoot Outcomes; My Favourite

My Four Favorite images from my first shoot for my Plastic Surgery Editorial. The main focal point for these images were the lips and lip enhancements. I want to create a very glamourous feel to plastic surgery hence the use of my huge Versace sunglasses.

Each image to me, is great. I love the placement of my model in all four images and the second one in particular is my ultimate favorite, However there is a misplacement in the background of that one so I will have to try and remove this in post production, I am glad this has happened as I now have a constant message in my head to always check the backgrounds of my location whether that be in the studio or on location so I have learnt a great deal from this first photo shoot.

Practical Session's

Graphic Eyeliner or eyeliner of any sort is a technique I struggle to master however I am very happy with the way mine turned out during our graphic eyeliner masterclass. I have since practiced more on myself and used this as part of looks for my other units to get more experience in this.

I really enjoyed our lip art masterclass. Being able to create different looks was really cool. I wanted to do a dark ombre lip which you can see above. I usually go for a soft, subtle lip so this was a big change for me. I found the left hand side of my models lips were easier to do than the right. I struggled to get my hand in a position so that i could create a very precise line however I think I did very well, although it would need some touch ups.

It's no secret last year i found hair classes very difficult. This year I have found I am more open minded and calm during lessons and I can create looks without getting to frustrated when they fail first time. This look was a high pony tail, which is very popular for hair stylists. I found gathering the hair and creating the volume for the ponytail the easiest part however I did not enjoy the double wrap around to cover the hair bobble. I found having a single peice to wrap around was much better for me rather than having two peices.

Perfecting the skin, one of my favourite masterclasses with Sarah. We learnt not only to perfect the face but to also think about the rest of the body also as the look doesn't just stop at the face. this was something that came up in my feedback last year and I feel I have reflected on this and I have now began to use this technique in all my applications this year, especially during my photoshoots for this unit which i feel show the amount of time i have spent perfecting the neck, shoulders and chest area.

Face Charts

The main focus here is marking the areas in which people have surgery, The nose, eyelids, undereyes and around the face. The rest of the look will be very soft with a nude/pink lip and slightly defined eyes. My hair design is going to be hollywood hair inspired with brushed out curls, this adds that little bit of glamour which was inspired by the Tom Ford campaign I blogged about.

The main focus here is on the lips. This shoot will be all about plumping the lips/lip fillers which seem to be extremely popular. The skin will be perfected and flawless and the hair is just going to ve scraped back as I will be wrapping the models head in bandages to allow the main focus to be on the lips. I will also be using sunglasses here to also add that little bit of glamour.

This was the first face chart I created for this unit and it was to attach tape and clips to my models face and have someone pull them to change her face shape/stretch the skin. I did not really like this when I came to deciding which looks I was going to go for so I left this out.

Showing how to create the appearance of a more defined face by contouring and highlighting. I wanted to create a look where the highlight and contour was extremely visible to show in an almost 'how to' way.

Layout Testing/Product Shot

Playing around with magazine/product shot layouts and visually experimenting with ideal locations for maximum attention. Product images are taken by myself. Text within the layout is

As editorial is my main focus for a career after leaving university I thought I would play around with some lay outs for magazines/product shots which I will need to produce for this unit.

Editorial Lighting

After completing a successful unit in Digital Imagery last year I would like to experience a different style of lighting. We used mainly beauty dishes and soft boxes. This was all done on white or black backgrounds, which is popular for editorial imagery but I would like to advance my lighting set up and use colored lights, such as gel covers. I have found a few pictures of one color or several colors mixed to give a multi colour effect that I think looks very unique and beautiful.

Tom Ford

Tom Ford became guest editor for French Vogue's holiday edition back in 2005. Shot by Tom Ford and styled by Carine Roitfeld, the series of images, modeled by Crystal Renn are said to mirror a plastic surgery obsessed woman. The images are visually amazing.

The three images I have included are not necessarily my favorite from the series of images but they are definitely the most disturbing, provocative and weirdest ones I have seen. They make me feel as though she is an older woman who has surgery to remain young, but not for the sake of vanity more so for the sake of sex. The image's are extremely sexual, as you can see. In the first image the model is being washed down by a male but has no underwear on, the second image, if you look closely (I did not see this at first) there is in fact a man in between the woman's legs and the last one is of the female and male model kissing quite passionately.

I think the images glamorize plastic surgery with the way the women are styled/made up. They look extremely sophisticated and beautiful even though they are bandaged up. It also is a pretty unrealistic view of the after effects of surgery, when your bandaged up your still healing, that means bruising, redness and swelling, something far from sexy or attractive with that being said, I would much rather see images like this than that of actual post op photos of surgery.

Pull Yourself Together

Photographer Baard Lunde shot an editorial series called 'Pull Yourself Together' for Noi.se Magazine. The images were made to imitate plastic surgery. The Huffington Post claimed the images were sinister and frightening, which they are. They are almost uncomfortable to look at. The images are spectacular at showing, in my opinion the more horrible/horrific experiences of cosmetic surgery.
The article also speaks about other designers/magazines who have had similar editorial images including Vogue Italia and Tom Ford which I will also be taking a look at.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen : genius of a generation. Knox, Kristin ; Getty Images, Inc. London : A. & C. Black 2010. Pgs 106-107.

I like these images of an Alexander McQueen show because the lips are extremely exaggerated, this could be a way I show the lip filler part of my project, with a comical sense.

Cosmetic Surgery Fashion Editorial Image Research

A series of editorial images I found during my research of current work. Each image I believe is very different. Some are very avant garde. I love the Vogue image where the model is being escorted through the hall by a nurse. Each image has a very glamorous feel to it, considering plastic surgery is less than glamorous to start with.

I find the images where needles being prodded into the skin very effective, it makes you realize the pain you will go through in the name of beauty. All the images are very clean and beautiful which is the way I like images, especially fashion/beauty editorials.

\My favorite images amongst these two mood boards has to be the image in the top mood board where they have attached tape and string onto the models face and appear to be pulling the skin to make it look very unusual and also very surreal.
My other image is the one where the models are bandaged up and the main focus is on the eyes or lips.

Organic Vs Fake: The Fake Series

From one extreme to the other. Majority of dramatic plastic surgery is done with artificial implants/products such as silicone implants for the breasts/bum. For the face, products like Juvederm are used to shape and plump the lips, Nose's are shaved down during reconstructions etc.

After researching myself about Lip Augmentations I know a vast amount about the different shapes, definitions etc that can be achieved and for someone like myself who has very thin, undefined lips.
I think this procedure is amazing for people as they get older due to the elasticity and the little plumpness the lips have will slowly start to decrease. One thing that I have started to notice (It is pretty much noticeable to everyone) is the over usage of lip fillers. Lips are starting to be less natural and plump and more duck like.

I believe that plastic surgery should not be used to completely change the way you look, which is a personal opinion. I think it should be used to enhance and prolong what you already have. Don't go in the clinic looking like you and come out looking like Cindy Crawford (although I would not say no)
Lets take Kylie Jenner as an example. Coming from such a famous family where not only are your older sisters very well known but your younger sister is one of the most sought after models within High Fashion. Kylie has admitted to having lip fillers and at first, they did not look bad. They looked very good but as she's got used to them being a natural looking size she seems to have slowly started to increase the amount of product going in resulting in the lips looking very unnatural, especially for her young face. I also find it very astounding how much her whole face has changed since having her lips done, she does not look like the same person.

Another surgery extremely common on the face is Nose Jobs. A lot of people I know would change their nose shapes if they could. This kind of surgery requires a lot of resting. The face bruises a lot, especially around the eyes and can be very uncomfortable, which is clearly tolerable if you really want that new nose. This is a video animation of a nose reduction. I don't know how I expected them to do it but I definitely did not expect them to completely remove the skin from around the nose. I got a little uncomfortable but it was very interesting.

Rhinoplasty Nose Surgery. Animation Video. YouTube, Pure Aesthetics Sydney. Available:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swGyPyBJiZ0

Another common way to alter the face is through contouring and highlighting. If done correctly, this can look just as good as plastic surgery. I have found a couple of images where the nose has been enhanced by make up alone.

GlamGeekConfessional. Online Blog, Blogger. Contouring Guide. Available: http://theglamgeekconfessional.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/beginners-guide-to-contouring-and.html
You can see here how much more defined the nose is, however this kind of contour would only be suitable in my opinion on camera or stage.

Organic Vs Fake: The Organic Series

Organic Vs Fake-

Most people will view cosmetic surgery as an extremely fake/unreal invention, However recently I personally have been made aware of botox result procedures called Vampire Face Lifts. These procedures are an almost natural way of plumping/tightening the skin, Medics who perform these procedures draw the clients blood, similar to a blood test and then re inject it into the desire area.

'The "Vampire Facelift" is a procedure that involves withdrawing a patient's own blood, processing it to create "platelet-rich plasma (PRP)," then re-injecting it to erase wrinkles and create a more youthful look.' - Real self. Bee's wax is another very common, natural ingredient used for cosmetics/cosmetic surgery.
Beeswax Fact's [http://www.beeswaxco.com/beeswax-facts.php] also informed me that it can be used for lip balms, reconstructive surgery, soaps and dental procedures.

Organic Beauty

Cosmetic Surgery

Organic beauty initially seemed like a very boring and obvious theme for this unit. I research it before I found my feet to choose this theme and although inspriring, I did not wish to create images based on food or nature, this just was not the mood I wanted to go for.

On a previous post I inserted an image of a female wrapped up in a bandage with a very prominant lip. This image was from a beauty story on Plastic surgery which I really wanted to do BUT I felt it did not fit the theme Organic Beauty and almost contradicted the theme so I put this idea to the back of my head and moved on, which is where my troubles began as I struggled to come up with anything else.

During my Tutorial today with Sarah I expressed my concern that I did not have a theme or idea but I mentioned my cosmetic surgery idea and she loved it. She asked me how I would expand on this idea and I then showed her the images I found and explained the different ways cosmetic surgery can be expressed such as in a comedy way or showing the different procedures such as lip enhancing, botox or nose jobs.

My main idea is to look at cosmetic surgery and how popular it has become. As this is an editorial style project my main focus will be how I could use these images within a magazine with editorial writing, product shots and illustrations. I want to focus my research on the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures such as lip fillers, nose jobs, brow lifts and botox. I would like to create looks that show a very glamorous/beautiful side to surgery much like the images I have seen. I would also like to use part of the brief of having to do product shots/illustrations to focus more on the organic side of my theme and how you don't always need these procedures to get great results, almost like a magazine article that gives the readers options on either having surgery or using products.
For example you can have surgery on the eye area to remove bags/wrinkles, this is painful and expensive, however there are products that claim to give amazing results without the pain such as L'Oreal's revitalift or even some amazing colour correction and concealer.
Lips are also an extremely common procedure but again, there are products that claim to plump and refine the lips without fillers.

Product Shot Research/Inspiration

As part of our assignment we are required to include 'Product Shots' within our professional blog.
Product shots, as well as illustrations can be used for advertisement purposes or to inform the viewer of the products used within an image. You can also contact PR from companies you have referenced if your image/blog gets enough media attention.

There are many ways to take pictures of products. You can use different backgrounds, the same background each time, add decorations around or just plain white, which is most common on instagram (a way I use on my own Instagram account)

mac makeup:

This is such a lovely images and it captured my attention immediately. I find MAC Cosmetics can be very grungy/edgy so this image shows the more soft/golden image behind MAC.

EVE LOM makeup launches at Space NK http://ift.tt/1c40UVH:
The white background has to be the most reoccuring on a majority of blogs/other social media platforms. It gives an image a very clean, crisp look and as professionals it looks very sophisticated.
I love the way the different products have been smudges/applied to the paper although I would probably cry if I had to tip some expensive foundation over paper and then throw it away afterwards!

<3:
Although this image look's more like a 'Whats in my make up bag' story within a magazine I think the composition/placement of the products is really nice. The shadows it creates with the lights give a more defined look. Also having the white background here works well as it's already a busy picture so It still looks very professional.
